The traditions linked to the “O-bon” summer festival are interpreted differently according to the region and the Buddhist sect, but at its core, the event is a fusion of the belief in ancestral spirits and Buddhism. Existing since ancient times, O-bon festival is an annual event held at this time of year all over Japan, providing a way to commemorate one’s ancestors.

A special altar is set up during the O-bon festival to honor the ancestral spirits, on which spirit animals “Shoryouma” (spirit horse) and “Shoryoushi” (spirit cow) are placed. Ancestors are said to ride on the backs of these spirit animals to and from the realm of the underworld. These “animals” are made using familiar summer vegetables: cucumbers for the horses and eggplants for the cows. The spirit horse brings the ancestors back to their families quickly, and the spirit cow returns the ancestors slowly.

This month at HIGASHI-YAMA Tokyo, we will be serving a variety of dishes that made from the finest seasonal ingredients.

We are looking forward to your visit.
