Happy New Year !

We hope that you were able to ring in a happy and healthy new year.

This is the Year of the Boar – the last in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. The ‘boar’ character carries meanings of structure, core and organization, and such years represent a system being brought to completion. In the ancient Jomon Period, Japanese people valued boars as a food source. Having many young, they were also a symbol of abundance and therefore often used in decorations on ancient clay pots.

Our unchanging prayer from ancient times to today has always been for bountiful harvests and joy to be shared among all.

We were most grateful for the privilege of celebrating HIGASHI-YAMA Tokyo’s 20th anniversary late last year. This year again, we devote ourselves across the four seasons to sharing the delights of food with all of you.

We open for service today and look forward to welcoming you.

Zouni

A quintessential New Year’s dish, zouni has its origins in the Muromachi Period (1336~1573), and recipes have been passed down for centuries taking on different colors to beautifully express each region’s unique food culture. We invite you to enjoy HIGASHI-YAMA Tokyo’s original zouni – perfect for a New Year celebration.

Zouni(Mochi rice cake soup with chicken and lotus root) ¥1,800
Served from January 9th to 19th

Wild Boar Hot Pot

Japanese people have eaten wild boar since the ancient Jomon Period. The arrival of Buddhism led to a widespread shift to vegetarian cuisine across Japan, however, wild boar, often referred to as botan, was well-known for its nourishing qualities and was eaten in secret as a kind of medicine.

At HIGASHI-YAMA Tokyo in celebration of the Year of the Boar, we have prepared a wild boar hot pot brimming with rustic beauty and rich, wholesome flavor. The harsh cold deepens with each day and this is the perfect dish to warm you up from the core, with plenty of tender wild boar meat and watercress in red miso soup. Please join us to enjoy this warming treat.

Wild boar hot pot(for 2 people) ¥4,500
Served from January 9th to February 2nd

New Year Celebratory Sake

To ring in the New Year with prayers for health and happiness, we wish to share a celebratory drink with you all by breaking open a sake cask. Starting on January 9th, masuzake will be served from a cask in small wooden boxes, but as quantities are limited, please join us sooner rather than later to partake in this tasty tradition.

20th Anniversary Revival Menu

Having celebrated twenty years since opening HIGASHI-YAMA Tokyo, we are reviving popular dishes from our menu over the years. Presenting one such dish each month, this January we are serving “Shimonita green onions with yuzu-kosho”.

So loved by the Edo Period feudal lords, called daimyo or tonosama, these green onions were known as tonosama-negi. Sweetened by the frost that forms upon them, soft steamed Shimonita green onions are topped with yuzu-kosho and ponzu to create this tasty, refreshing dish that we invite you to come and enjoy.
