Japanese cuisine is rich in a variety of ingredients from the sea and mountains. Local dishes strongly reflect the history of the area. Based on its unique climate and natural features, each local cuisine is like a treasure box filled with the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors.
At each event in the series, FOOD NIPPON will focus on one prefecture or region and introduce its unique ingredients, sake and tableware in our special course menu. FOOD NIPPON aims to help diners in Tokyo rediscover Japanese food culture.
The area featured in the second event this July is Iki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Surrounded by the Genkainada Sea, Iki Island is known for its bountiful nature and ancient history.
Filled with various shrines and ruins, it is called "Ikikoku" country in the Chinese historical text, "Gishiwajinden".
This month, we are preparing a menu that will give you a taste of Iki Island, "the home of barley shochu". We are looking forward to your visit.

Iki Island has a long history of shochu making, and it developed its unique method of production
based on distillation techniques introduced from the mainland China in the 16th century. During this event, we will serve a selection of shochu from seven local producers. We hope you enjoy the shochu’s clean flavor, which comes from the clear spring water used to make it, and the touch of sweetness that comes from the rice.
Join us on to "Iki Shochu Day" on the 1st July to celebrate the 400-year history
of shochu making in Iki and find your favorite brand. *Geographical indication is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin. (e.g. Bordeaux and Cognac.)
