Japanese cuisine is rich in a variety of ingredients from the sea and mountains. Local dishes strongly reflect the history of the area. Based on its unique climate and natural features, each local cuisine is like a treasure box filled with the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors.
At each event in the series, FOOD NIPPON will focus on one prefecture or region and introduce its unique ingredients, sake and tableware in our special course menu. FOOD NIPPON aims to help diners in Tokyo rediscover Japanese food culture.
The area featured in the fourth event this December is the Pacific coastal region of Iwate Prefecture. It has been two years and eight months since 3.11 -- the date of the devastating tsunami and earthquake disaster. On our travels in Miyako, Kamaishi and Ofunato, we saw the local people persevering with courage and generosity as they work toward recovery while surrounded by the beautiful forest and sea.
We learned the importance of producing high quality delicious food without compromise, and to take pleasure in the flavors of nature.
We hope you will enjoy these delicious and nutritious seasonal ingredients from the harsh winter landscape of Iwate. We are looking forward to your visit.

One of the few Japanese prefectures that has a food self-sufficiency ratio of over 100%, Iwate Prefecture has supported the food culture of Japan for a long time. Off the shore of Sanriku, where the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents collide, one of the biggest fish catches in the world occurs, and it brings the fruits of the sea year-round. We are preparing a taste of Tohoku, including Donko soup, a local seasonal dish cooked with fatty Donko (Japanese hakeling) with winter vegetables, Pacific cod, oysters and hizunamasu - sliced pickled salmon head.
Appetizer plate / Donko fish and winter vegetable soup/ Deep fried oyster
FOOD NIPPON Special Dinner Course ¥7,800 (per person) *Open throughout the event. We are looking forward to seeing you at our restaurant. |

Suisen Brewery lost its production facilities in Rikuzentakata during the earthquake, but after only a year and a half, they have come back and opened a new brewery in Ofunato. They named it 'Mitoi (meaning 3.1.1) Brewery' with the hope that people do not forget the devastation caused by the great earthquake. During this event, we will serve a selection of six sake from three local producers from the Sanriku coast, both their flagship sake and a 'local-only' sake which is difficult to find outside of Iwate. We hope you will enjoy these special sake made by master brewers who are proud of brewing in their home town, with our winter dishes.
